Steve Rosendale’s ‘Cinéma Du Look’ references the eponymous French film movement of the 1980s and 90s. Denigrated for having more style than substance, films associated with the movement fused elements of high and low culture, featuring disaffected young people more connected to their peers than their families.

Rosendale pays homage to the movement’s irresistibility. He sets up an intriguing mise en scene — a beautiful young woman streams down a highway, her gaze catching ours from the rear-view window. ‘Cinéma Du Look’ occurs in a universe that we will never experience and yet it is somehow familiar. What is intrigue amputated from meaning?

Since the early 2000s, Rosendale has exhibited regularly across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. A finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, his work graces the walls of corporate and private collections in Australia and overseas.
