Cressida Campbell is among Australia’s most sought after artists. Her popularity lies not only with her aesthetic, which is breathtaking in itself, but her philosophy for life. The fruit of labour and time intensive processes, her work is the embodiment of patience. It works not against but with time, paying dues to the transience and nobility of everyday life, and the domestic universes we inhabit.

‘Writer’s Block’ is an artwork in two parts: a unique woodblock print on paper and the substrate it was pulled from, reconfigured into a dining room chair. The two objects exist in a delicate dance, mirrored images, one looking out and the other looking up, either side of the artists practice. Campbell, who once reflected that she was lucky enough to find almost anything interesting to look at, turns an ordinary object into a sculpture, dwelling on the beauty of calligraphy, butterflies and Arabic calligraphy.

A master in her field, Campbell is represented across national and international collections, including at the National Gallery of Victoria and British Museum. She is a multi-award winner and the subject of a retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and National Gallery of Australia.

Her work is a quiet revelation, born in the belief “Art is the best way to restore one’s spirits”.
