David Boyd, member of the Boyd family dynasty, is among the great feelers of Australian art. His work crosses universal and mythological themes, using poetry, philosophy and history to articulate the human experience.

In ‘Children in the Orchid’, a luminous oil painting on canvas, Boyd paints children frolicking in the Australian landscape. They drift towards the sky, swirling towards a flock of cockatoos, royal blue flowers crested in the foreground. Having originally studied at Melbourne University Conservatorium of Music, there is a melodic quality to Boyd’s work – a crescendo of colour and emotion on canvas.

Boyd traverses themes with dexterity and wit. He was a master potter, painter and printmaker, and a co-signer of the Antipodean Manifesto alongside his brother Arthur Boyd. Represented in all state collections, Boyd is an essential addition for collections of Australian modernist art and ‘Children in the Orchid’, emanating golden light, is a particularly divine representation.
