In 1973, a printmaking studio in Venice – Centro Internazionale Della Grafica Venezia – commissioned nineteen artists to respond to Venice. The portfolio, titled Venice Yesterday Today Tomorrow, brings together senior Italian artists. Disparate in style and philosophy, these works present a portal into the lineage, tensions and desires of Venice, once the heart of Western art.

In Luca Crippas ‘Untitled (Venezia Graphic)’ Venezia topples from the sky. Against a muted cityscape – birds flocking, terrace houses wearing and clouds stirring – a storm brews. The dream of Venice falls from the sky to the canals below.

Rather than a Death in Venice, this work is the death of Venice – told with humour and elegance. As writer Guido Le Noci has written, Crippas "eyes are two swords", searing into their subject. Untitled (Venezia Graphic) will make a fascinating addition to collections of twentieth century art.
