The George Bell Circle

Led by George Bell, the George Bell Circle was instrumental in Australian Modernism. From his Toorak home and premises on Bourke Street, Bell introduced a generation of artists to the ideas of European modernism: the importance of form and composition; design techniques; and using colour to accentuate form, not mimic reality. Among his formal and informal students were Eric Thake, Fred Williams, Sybil Craig, Dorothy Braund, Constance Stokes and Vic O’Connor.

Discover the fascinating story behind Bell and why he championed modern art here.
