Fred Williams is considered a master of Australian art. Uniting a reverence for the landscape with an extensive knowledge of European art, he produced visions of Australia that for many, were redefining. Looking into the country’s harsh, sparse, wet and textual extremities, Williams excavated the bones rather than the surface skin of the land. 
 
Williams is a multi-time Wynne Prize winner and represented across public collections. He was the first Australian to be honored with a solo exhibition at the Tate Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1977 and has been the subject of numerous retrospectives locally. With an admired drawing and graphics practice in addition to his paintings, Williams is a formidable and indelible figure in Australian art.
