David Rose

B. 1936 - 2006

Sydney based artist and teacher David Rose studied forestry before becoming a full-time artist in the 1960s. After spending a short time working as a commercial screen printer, he adapted the skills he’d learnt to his own practice.

Rose’s initially abstract style began to lean towards more figurative landscapes when he and his family moved to a farmhouse in the Central Coast of NSW in 1976. Though his work continuously changed over the course of his life there is a sensitivity and elegance of line visible throughout, reflecting his love of the Australian landscape and skill as a printmaker.

His work is collected by major institutions in Australia and overseas, including the Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of South Australia and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
